HIS LETTERS AND CARDS SENT HOME,  WHICH RESULTED  IN LITERALLY HUNDREDS OF ITEMS OF CORRESPONDANCE FROM THIS ALMOST DAILY LETTER WRITING. RECENTLY PURCHASED DIRECT FROM THE FAMILY. SCHMIDT SERVED IN THE WAFFEN-SS FROM THE BEGINING TO THE END. SERVING AS A PANZER GRENADIER IN SS DIV GERMANIA, WESTLAND, AND NORDLAND. FIGHTING ON THE EASTERN FRONT, SAW ACTION AT TARNOPOL, STALINGRAD, CHARKOV, LUBLIN, AND IS EVEN RECORDED AS SEEING ACTION AT THE WARSAW RISING. AFTER THE CONFLICT, MADE HIS WAY WEST AND WAS INTERNED BY THE AMERICANS TILL 1947. AWARDED MANY COMBAT DECORATIONS INCLUDING THE WOUND BADGE, IRON CROSS, INFANTRY ASSAULT BADGE, CLOS COMBAT CLASP, AND SILVER WOUND BADGE. WON 1ST AND 2ND CLASS IRON CROSS.

HIS BROTHER RICHARD SCHMIDT WAS KILLED IN NORMANDY AS PART OF THE 2ND SS PANZER DIVISION DAS REICH.
